Portugal has been a CISG Contracting State since 1 October 2021.

Preparation of Portugal's accession to the CISG

In August 2020, Portugal completed the steps necessary under the Portuguese Constitution for an accession to the 1980 Sales Convention, when a decree by the Portuguese government (the Council of Ministers) authorizing the accession to the CISG was published in Portugal's official gazette:

CISG-related terminology in Portuguese practice

The full name of the 1980 Sales Convention in the Portuguese language is "Convenção das Nações Unidas sobre Contratos para Venda Internacional de Mercadorias".

In Portuguese court practice and legal writings from Portugal, the 1980 Sales Convention is usually referred to as "Convenção de Viena" (Vienna Convention) or "CVIM".

Participation of Portugal in the 1980 Diplomatic Conference in Vienna

Portugal was one of the 62 States that participated in the Diplomatic Conference held from 10 March until 11 April 1980 that adopted the Sales Convention's text. The Portuguese delegation in Vienna was comprised as follows:
