Preparations for Ethiopia's accession to the CISG

Over the last years, Ethiopia has initiated steps necessary under the Ethiopian Constitution for an accession to the 1980 Sales Convention. At its session held on 25 June 2020, the House of Peoples’ Representatives of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia ratified the CISG, and authorized the Ministry of Trade and Industry to follow up the implementation of the Convention in collaboration with other government organs:

Proclamation No. 1220/2020: A Proclamation to Ratify the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, Federal Negarit Gazette of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia of 25 June 2020 [– in Amharic and English]

However, Ethiopia has not yet deposited a formal instrument of accession to the CISG with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, as required by Art. 91(3), (4) CISG. Until this step has been taken, Ethiopia therefore remains a CISG non-Contracting State.
