CISG enters into force for Portugal

Today, on 1 October 2021, the 1980 Sales Convention (CISG) entered into force in respect of Portugal in accordance with Art. 99(2) CISG. Portugal is the 94th Contracting State to join the Convention.

The effect of the CISG's entry into force for Portugal is that Portugal is now a "Contracting State" for the purpose of the CISG's applicability pursuant to Art. 1(1)(a) or (b) CISG. Simply put, the Convention can therefore apply to international sales contracts involving a party from Portugal that will be concluded on or after 1 October 2021 (for the precise definition of the CISG's temporal sphere of application, see Art. 100(1) and (2)).
